I can't believe a any human being would think this was the proper way to handle this situation.

He's just adding lightness!
On a serious note, I feel bad for the guy. It may not make sense to us, watching a youtube video, but I've certainly done things that seem obviously stupid in hindsight.

This is where you get out, walk over as if you were going to offer up some sort of assistance and say "jack knifed er did ya?". Obvious guy always wins in this sort of circumstance.

I would feel bad if he didn't keep trying...
I think it's a clear case of not knowing when to cut your losses...

Clearly needs more hours in this

I have a little sympathy for him. even in GTAV I have a hellva time backing those damn towed cars up to the right spot when you have to turn the opposite direction to make the trailered item pivot in the opposite way.

In a car/truck, there's a simple trick for reversing with a trailer: hold the bottom of the steering wheel, and the trailer will go to whichever side you move your hand. I guess you can do the same in GTA - just hold the controller upside down or something.

Dude, how does this guy have a CDL...

That's just bizarre. Did it not occur to him to get the trailer straight, then put the legs down and unhitch it?

isnt it the other way around? the thing is you first need to move contrary to the direction you want to move the trailer, this points the trailer where you want to go, then you just play with the wheel following your trailer

I think a lot of things didn't occur to him...I'm baffled.

"you first need to move contrary to the direction you want to move the trailer"
Yup. And holding the wheel at the bottom reverses your inputs for you, so you can just steer normally. You want the trailer to go left, you need to turn the wheel clockwise - to the right as you normally hold the wheel, but if you hold the wheel at the bottom you're moving your hand to the left for clockwise so it's the same as the direction the trailer goes in.

I do think the hundreds of hours I spent with that game series really did at least conceptually help me with driving and reversing the various tow rigs and trailers I've been tasked with

Seems to me it would have been a whole lot easier and with no damage to just back up til you get to a cross street.
There's a satellite system on there. That should have told him there was a 13' bridge.

Only thing that could have made this better: a "how's my driving placard on the trailer, big enough to be readable in the video"

May be easier, but then the guy wouldn't be internet famous...

Probably doesn't. There are a huge number of drivers that work for dirt that just drive until they get caught. Half of them don't even speak English well enough to pass the CDL exams or communicate with dispatch and a good number are on drugs.

He also would still have a job. I'm sure his bosses have gotten wind of the video.

I really hope he tried to pass it off somehow..."I don't know...they came out of nowhere! A pack dogs tore the whole bumper off!"

I have a feeling my reaction was exactly the same when I first heard. It sounds like there's something wrong somewhere. Plus, I was also drunk, I expect :)

Those are for tracking the truck. Those big yellow signs on the side of the road try their best to alert you of the low bridge ahead

Guess it does not matter anyway. He did some pretty good damage to the cab (probably cracked the fiberglass of the sleeper)

Obligatory!!!
but how did that even happen? i'm assuming he started skidding because he realized he wouldn't fit under that bridge?

I doubt it was that intense...I'm guessing he stopped, and then attempted to back up and couldn't do it...

I bet he has a CDL. USA Truck is too big a company to risk him not having one. I'll lay money he doesn't work for them any longer. Noting said he got a 100 on his test. He probably got the minimum score needed to pass. He is still an idiot.
